Apple in Talks with OpenAI and Google for AI Integration in iOS 18

Apple is reportedly in discussions with both OpenAI and Google to incorporate advanced AI capabilities into its upcoming iOS 18 operating system for iPhones and iPads. According to sources familiar with the matter, Apple is exploring the possibility of integrating OpenAI’s language models, such as ChatGPT, to power a new AI-based chatbot assistant that could complement or replace Siri.

The negotiations revolve around licensing OpenAI’s technology to develop a sophisticated chatbot or virtual assistant leveraging large language models similar to ChatGPT. Apple aims to deeply integrate these generative AI capabilities into iOS 18’s core functionalities and applications.

In addition to talks with OpenAI, Apple has also resumed negotiations with Google regarding the potential use of the search giant’s Gemini chatbot technology. Bloomberg reports that Apple may strike deals with both OpenAI and Google, or it may opt to rely solely on its in-house AI models.

Apple has been secretive about its AI plans, although CEO Tim Cook has hinted at major AI-powered updates forthcoming later this year. Speculations suggest that Apple is developing large language models to power AI capabilities in iOS 18 and future operating systems. However, the company sees partnerships with leading AI labs like OpenAI and Google as a means to offer more advanced features and precise results.

Earlier reports hinted at Apple’s negotiations with OpenAI through references to a “SiriSummarization” framework integrating with ChatGPT in internal iOS 18 code. Recent reports have also corroborated Apple’s discussions with Google over utilizing Gemini.

If the agreements materialize, an OpenAI-powered chatbot could enhance various functionalities on Apple devices, including question-answering, analysis, writing, and coding assistance. Nonetheless, concerns persist regarding potential biases and inaccuracies in current large language models.

Apple is expected to unveil its AI strategy and new AI-centric hardware and software features at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June. The final decisions regarding partnerships with OpenAI, Google, or other entities for the AI core of iOS 18 are likely to be disclosed at that time.
