This year, the IPL’s business enterprise value dropped to US$9.9 billion from US$11.2 billion last year for the first time in recent history
On Wednesday, D&P Advisory released Beyond 22 Yards 2024 – IPL’s Legacy and WPL’s Vision, a comprehensive report on the valuation of both the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Women’s Premier League (WPL). The second season of WPL garnered a tremendous response from fans, while the IPL 2024 saw remarkable scoring records being broken. This season also made history with a single match witnessing over 500 runs being scored.
IPL’s business enterprise value fell to US$9.9 billion from US$11.2 billion last year. This represents an 11.7% decrease.
Reassessment of media rights is the cause of the decline. Prior to the current cycle, D & P Advisory had made assumptions about the value of media rights when they are renewed. However, recent developments in the media & entertainment industry and the expectation of reduced competitors / bidders at the next IPL auction have caused the estimate to be revised downward.
Almost 8% of WPL’s enterprise value has increased to $160 million from $150 million in the inaugural edition.
Once again, Mumbai Indians emerged as the most valuable franchise in the 2024 IPL, followed by Chennai Super Kings.
Based on the report, the value of the IPL ecosystem has declined by 10.6% compared to the last edition, falling from INR 92,500 Cr to INR 82,700 Cr. This represents an 11.7% decrease in USD terms from $11.2 billion to $9.9 billion. Despite the league’s unyielding allure, which continues to draw viewers across television and digital platforms, this downturn is troubling.
As part of their previous year’s valuation report, they have already accounted for the expected surge from media rights renewals. In 2022, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to separate the media rights for television and digital platforms for the upcoming five-year cycle beginning in 2023.
As we move ahead, the possibility of a lack of intense competition may result in a more cautious approach to bidding for IPL media rights. The value of the WPL ecosystem has also seen an 8.0% increase from its previous edition, climbing from INR 1,250 Cr to 1,350 Cr. In terms of USD, this equates to a rise from $150 million to $160 million. The league has always been an exciting amalgamation of cricket, commerce, and amusement, and this year was no exception. It continued to enthrall viewers on both television and digital platforms.
